Puppy Biting & How To Stop It.

It is extremely common for new puppies to bite and nip their new owner and as such it is usually the first problem a new owner will have to overcome. Nearly all new puppies take part in this behaviour, which is hard wired to its brain, but as a family pet it is a behaviour that needs to be controlled. To stop puppy biting becoming a problem for you there are some very simple tactics that will stop the danger in its track before it can get out of hand. Before solving a problem we must first understand it, so before tackling it let us realise why they do it.

Puppies bite naturally for many reasons and it is important for the dog owner to understand and recognise each of them. 

Puppy Play biting.
Exploration.
To be the boss.
Excitement.
Fear.
The herding instinct.
Teething pain.
Hunger.

Different puppies bite for different reasons and this article is not long enough to advise on them all, We are concentrating on the most common reason here along with general good practice that will probably deal with any puppy biting, whatever the underlying reason. The most experienced reason for puppy biting is play biting.

**Dealing With Puppy Biting**
The advice and tips that follow are all positive ways to stop your puppy biting, of course, without a consistent approach they will work no better than doing nothing, in fact it may be worse. All the family need to be aware of the approach being taken to control the puppy nipping, this includes the children, and all should apply the rules without exception. Follow this simple consistency rule and your puppy can learn to stop biting in a matter fo hours depending on their intelligence.

Let puppy know.
Follow the way puppies play in the pack, when your puppy bites, let out a yelp and immediately stop playing and avoid eye contact for a while, your puppy immediately understands this is a bad thing and will try to make friends again. Do not hold a grudge, after a short time when puppy has realised you should make up by continuing play, but repeat it every time, if everyone apples this technique the puppy will stop biting in record time so everyone can enjoy pain free play sessions.
